Well that was a bloodthirsty first week wasn't it! Not a single played game was won by less than 15 points - four 17-3's and a 20-0. One draw for players unable to make it. Let's dig in to it!
Unfortunately Ben and Dave C were unable to make their game so it was a 10-10 there and nothing exciting to write about. In my head, though, not a single fish head or Khorne worshipper was left alive.
In the next couple of days I will put up my Week 2 Predictions.
Game 1 - Dave V Gary - CSM (Pactbound) V Orks (War Horde)
This was....difficult to watch. A trainwreck. Abuse.
It started with the psychological warfare of bringing up past trauma. Many moons ago before each player knew each other they were paired together at a GT. Intrepid young David didn't know a Bloodthirster from a Bloodletter and Gary ruled over the local land. Gary had the game in hand until Dave pulled out a wildly statistically unlikely number of mortals from the Bloodthirster at a key moment and won the game. The first thing Dave did upon arrival? Bring out the very same Bloodthirster and place it on the table. Does his cruelty know no bounds?
Dave is playing a very shooty CSM list, Vindicators and Forgefiends aplenty and Gary is playing Orks. Do you know what kills Squighog boys quickly? Vindicators with Sustained hits.
End of T1 almost the entirety of Gary's key units were vapourised by demolisher shells and it was a done deal. He did continue playing, because he is a brave soul but there was no coming back from that level of murder and is currently seeking counselling.
Game 2 - Sam V Alex - Dark Angels(Gladius) V Nids (Monster heavy Invasion Fleet).
I turned up at the table, eager to try my list for the first time, a glint of innocence in my eyes. Alex hates innocence.
I knew Maleceptors are a pain to kill, especially with a 5+++ on demand but I was confident in my Eradicators. I felt like I could weather the ranged storm on my DWK and that Lictors aren't that much of a threat.
Turns out Lictors into Space Marine bodies are a lot more lethal than into Custodes bodies....like a lot a lot. Fucking things cleared up most of my scoring units. Lesson learned.
Eradicators sure can murder the fuck out of a Maleceptor. What they shouldn'd do is be be baited out to kill one only to be surrounded by massive gribblies with no way out. Patience Samuel, patience. A second lesson learned.
DWK can, in fact, weather a pretty brutal storm of gunfire but not 1500 points of it when you fail to kill things and fail 4" charges into a Haruspex. Stupid slow boys.
A lovely game honestly - I love learning the limitations of myself and my army. I'm sticking with the Eradicators but making other upgrades.
Also Alex's dice tray made me fall in love and I am making one like his because I live for the sound of dice hitting wood.
Game 3 - Max V Andy - Custodes(Shield Host) V Guard
Andy fully shit on my predictions for a 12-8 victory to him so thanks for that mate - won't be backing you again. This was the first of many 17-3's this week and sounded quite the brutal affair.
Max's gigantic brick of Allarus with access to Lethals did some work at range, into whatever target it fancied, and then proceeded to annihilate things in melee, as they are wont to do. Some big charges were made at key points and Rogal Dorns were sent back to the scrapyard (oh no you blanked my first 2 damage attack - here is 30 more).
Andy spend at least three days locked away crying after this defeat and was only coaxed out of hiding by leaving a trail of badly painted Ultramarines out of his cave - he couldn't resist the call of the airbrush. Good work Max!
Game 4 - Ross V Craig - Guard V Death Guard
Turns out 24 Ogryns in a Stormlord, none of which get access to Orders isn't amazing. Who knew. Hordes of smelly anti-infantry stuff smashed up the chonky mutant boys with flamers, Plaguebursts and Terminators.
This actually prompted the first Wildcard to be used and, while there are still 12 chonky boys, 6 of them have been eating their spinach and are now Bullgryns. The Stormlord remains present and a Knight Crusader has been invited to the party.
This ended up 17-3 to Craig.
Game 5 - Leo V Jack - World Eaters V Aeldari
Sneaky V Choppy with Sneak coming out on top. I don't think the score represents how close this game was for a majority of it and it is great to see Leo improving as a player - not just putting his army on the line and charging forward, as is tempting as World Eaters, but taking a more methodical approach.
Leo got a first hand introduction to the Warp Spiders and how they fare into SM bodies (well all bodies actually) and that is always a fun experience to watch as an outsider - "They do what??".
I will obviously take full credit for Jack's victory as I helped brain storm his list (*takes a bow*). Seriously though its quite a mean one - Fire Prisms scare your big boys from going to near the Avatar, meaning anything trying to kill it...fails. All the while Hawks and Spiders and Scorpions are going round scoring points. The Wraithblades looked fun as well.
Jack came out 17-3 after Leo was slowly whittled away while keeping it close for 4 turns. Excellent work.
