AoS League Round 1: Rounding up

In time honoured tradition, it is time to recap the first round of the AoS league prior to the next round kicking off.

I predicted I would lack insight into match ups, and I have stayed absolutely true to my word with a bunch of blow outs in round 1 contradicting my predictions of lots of close games.

Therefore, the only way is up (like with my position in the league after the first round).

Matt (Cities of Sigmar) vs Mike (Stormcast)

Prediction - Mike win 40-32

Result - Matt win 38-22

This ended up as a fairly comfortable win for Matt in a very well natured game I’m led to understand. Mike committed a lot of points to try to murder Tahlia but was unfortunately unsuccessful which in turn seems to have led at least in part to his downfall.

Mike said he was looking forward to relieving Yndastra of her duties as well, but Matt has done that on his behalf by wild carding and removing her from his list entirely!

Aidan (Stormcast) vs Holly (Gitz)

Prediction - Holly win 42-36

Result - MATT win 42-24

Matt stepped in to take on Aiden for this one, so ended up being Stormcast vs CoS which Matt won handily but said after that it was perhaps closer than the score would suggest, which is good!

The most notable thing about this game is that it took place near a grown man having a tantrum, with Aid’s concentration no doubt hurt by having to duck and dodge dice being thrown around the room.

Callum (Gitz) vs Leo (Kruleboyz)

Prediction - Callum win 42-34

Result - Callum win 44-16

Sam would call this a bumming, I’m calling it technically my first correct prediction of the league, though the score was much more one sided than I expected (not for the first time this round I might add).

Trolls can be brutal to take down as Leo discovered in this match, and Mr Bombastic himself could not exert his will on the game this time.

Chris L (Sylvaneth) vs Alden (LRL)

Prediction - Chris win 38-36

Result - Alden win 44-15

From one big result to another! My prediction was WILDLY incorrect on this one, but as more practice games have been played, we are all starting to realise that Alden is the player to beat, and will invariably need a nickname like ‘the conqueror’ or ‘the terrible’ if he keeps handing out beatings like this one.

A combination of Chris being unable to roll a 4+ and Alden’s thirst for blood (and bark) led to a very one-sided game. Hopefully Chris learned something from it other than not wanting to play Alden’s elves again!

Jake (FEC) vs Joe (Maggotkin)

Prediction - Joe win 40-34

Result - Jake win 33-17

Imagine showing such poor solidarity to someone playing the same army as you, I’m disappointed in myself quite frankly.

Ushoran’s mad lads ate up the Maggotkin’s rotten flesh like they were a drunk at the kebaby on a Friday night.

The undoubted MVP is the wall, which is enough to break the most mobile armies, but into 4” moves it’s often terminal as proved the case here.

Dickie (Skaven) vs Pete (Fyreslayers)

Prediction - Pete win 38-28

Result - Dickie win 42-24

The hits just keep on coming for me with another incorrect prediction here.

I expected the dwarves to have the bodies to stifle the menagerie of monsters, and the big rats ended up having plenty of damage to run through the bare-feet axe men, with a double turn to boot which was used very effectively to ensure the win for Dickie.

Craig (FEC) vs Tom (Draconian Skywing)

Prediction - Tom win 42-34

Result - Tom win 36-18

I vastly overestimated my ability to score some points or kill anything in this game, with only 1 dragon and a couple of manifestations being dropped. There is an (unrelated) ongoing enquiry into the legitimacy of Tom’s dice, which almost never failed to roll a 3+ when required.

Turns out dragon shooting is almost as terrifying as dragon teeth, with ongoing burn effects which are going to be a real pain to those without ward saves in future games.

I spectacularly rolled snake eyes on not one, but two charges, wasting valuable CP. Luckily I have a new Baron of Dice set for Tuesday, because the rate I’m burning dice which betray me is getting out of hand.

Kyle (Skaven) vs Lauren (Sylvaneth)

Prediction - Kyle win 38-36

Result - Kyle win 46-36

This match gets the ‘yes-yes!’ award for my only correct prediction AND narrow scoreline, so slow clap for me (thank you, thank you).

I actually predicted Lauren’s score to the exact number as well (just saying).

This sounded like a great game, with Kyle scoring solidly all the way through until Lauren made a big push onto objectives using tree-based shenanigans in the late game.

Lauren was the top scoring loser in round 1 by a whopping 12 points so kudos due!

Massive kudos also to Kyle for completing both Chaos battle tactics in this game also, navigating the wording of ordained charge is difficult enough, let alone completing it!

Predictions to come for round 2 in another post later.
